Can A Building Have A Birthday?

Whenever I want to escape from my office to a cool, loft-type space, I take the elevator in our building from the lobby to the 7th floor. It’s a journey in time through our 90-year-old building — entering the antique brass elevator doors only to be emptied into the contemporary atelier of John Sullivan, a man of empirical taste, appreciation of historic structures, and a man of the arts.  Sullivan has been our partner in the 20-year adventure of our purchase and restoration of the old People’s National Bank and Trust building at 31 Mamaroneck Avenue, the first (I am told) skyscraper in Westchester. John, working with ArtsWestchester, shared our vision of a home for the arts in the center of White Plains. According to John: “I always looked at the bigger picture—the idea that we could create an opportunity for artists to be a part of the redevelopment of the city. That means the most to me.”

John Sullivan, principal of Sullivan Architecture, is ArtsWestchester’s architect as it continues to make building improvements.  John, and other key players in making ArtsWestchester’s vision for a home in downtown White Plains a reality, will be honored at this year’s ArtsBash – this year, an “Arts Birthday Bash” to celebrate our 20 years in the building.  Sullivan Architecture will open its 7th floor doors to guests of this year’s arts party and will have on display drawings and photos of various phases of the building’s renovation.
