A Tree Grows for Sarah Haviland
Some years ago, artist Sarah Haviland constructed a steel replica of the old beech tree, a historic symbol in the city of white plains. The sculpture project was supported by an NEA grant to the then Westchester Arts Council, now ArtsWestchester. Recently Sarah was involved with another tree project, this one with a team of nine Sculpture Club students from Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC). They created an interactive “Poet-Tree,” a temporary installation in the main lobby near the Tribeca Theater. The eight-foot-tall public art project celebrates Poetry Month by distributing short poems from the tree to the college and theater communities.
